Christian homeschooling – When God first placed the desire to Christian homeschool on my heart, I didn’t know all the details – I just knew I wanted something more rooted.
Rooted in the rhythms of home.
Rooted in the Word of God.
Rooted in relationship with my children.
Rooted in peace – not pressure.
That’s where the heart of Root & Refuge Cottage School began. It’s not just a homeschool name – it’s a vision. A reflection of the values our family holds dear. A picture of what we hope our home will be: a place where learning and love are deeply intertwined.
As a stay-at-home, homeschooling mama of four, I’ve walked through the doubts, the fears, and the endless comparison traps. But over and over, God has drawn me back to this truth: the home is fertile ground for discipleship. Root & Refuge was born out of conviction that education is more than worksheets and deadlines – it’s about forming souls, shaping character, and building strong family foundations.
Why We Chose to Homeschool
Our journey into Christian homeschooling wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. It was a gradual unfolding. It began with a longing to spend more intentional time with our children. To slow down. To savor their childhood, not rush through it.
We wanted our children’s education to be saturated with Scripture, wonder, and purpose. We wanted to teach them to love learning, to ask good questions, and most importantly – to know God personally. Homeschooling gives us the freedom to pursue that vision, at our own pace and with our own priorities.
Root & Refuge Cottage School isn’t just about academics – it’s about atmosphere. It’s about creating a space where children feel safe to grow, to explore, and to become who God created them to be, It’s cottage -style homeschooling, gentle and life-giving, rooted in faith and family rhythms.
What Root & Refuge Means
The name Root & Refuge carries deep significance for our family:
Root – Our goal is to raise children who are deeply rooted in truth, grounded in Scripture, and strong in their identity in Christ. Like the tree planted by streams of water in Psalm 1, we want their roots to go deep so they can stand strong in any season.
Refuge – In a world filled with chaos, confusion, and pressure, we want our home to be a refuge. A safe place. A quiet place. A sacred place where grace abounds and peace dwells. Home is their first sanctuary – and we take that role seriously.
This name reflects not just our homeschool, but our heart for motherhood and discipleship. It’s a continuation of The Rooted Motherhood – the belief that when moms are rooted in Christ, they create homes that are full of life, truth, and strength.
Homeschooling as an Extension of Motherhood
For us, homeschooling is not a separate task from mothering – it’s an extension of it. It’s a natural overflow of the calling God has given us to nurture, teach, and shepherd the hearts of our children. It allows us to disciple in the everyday – at the kitchen table, during read-alouds, while folding laundry, or walking through nature.
Every lesson becomes an opportunity to speak life. Every routine becomes a rhythm of grace. Every moment matters.
And while it’s not always easy, it is worth it.
You don’t need to do it all – just say yes to what God’s calling you to do.
Encouragement for the Homeschooling Mother
If you’re a mama who’s felt the pull toward homeschooling but also the weight of uncertainty, I want to say this: You don’t have to do it like everyone else. You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t need a perfect curriculum, a Pinterest-worthy space, or a rigid schedule. You just have to be willing to say yes, plant the seeds, and trust the Lord with the growing.
God equips those He calls. And if He’s placed the desire in your heart, He will guide every step of the way.
At Root & Refuge Cottage School, we’re choosing to build slowly, love deeply, and stay rooted. This journey isn’t perfect – and it’s not meant to be. But it’s deeply meaningful. Every morning we begin our day not with a bell or bus, but with Bible and breakfast. Morning light on the table. Open books. Open Bibles. Open hearts.
The Rooted Motherhood and Root & Refuge Cottage School are two sides of the same calling. One is the heart – being deeply rooted in Christ as a mother. The other is the home – raising up rooted children in a refuge of grace. This blog will be a place where I share our homeschool journey – routines that work for our family, planning strategies, curriculum we love, spiritual encouragement, and real talk for Christian homeschooling moms.
Because the mission is too important to do it alone – and there’s beauty in walking this path together.

The other day, while I was folding laundry my three-year-old walking in holding a rock she found in the yard. “Mama, did God make this?” Her tiny question stopped me mid-fold, not because I didn’t know the answer – but because I realized this was a Kingdom moment – for raising kingdom kids. Motherhood is…
What if homemaking was more than just keeping things tidy or getting dinner on the table? What if it was holy work – sacred ground, quietly cultivated through the rhythms of everyday life? Welcome to Oak & Olive Homestead, a little corner of the world where faith and home come together. Where sourdough rises in…
Many wonder why moms need the Church – but the answer runs deep. Motherhood is one of the highest callings God can place on a woman’s life. It is gritty and glorious, stretching and sanctifying. In the quiet moments of rocking a baby to sleep or the chaos of wrangling toddlers through a Sunday service,…
This morning started with spilled cereal, a diaper blowout, and a toddler meltdown – all before 8 a.m. I stood in the kitchen, coffee in hand, trying to keep my voice calm as chaos swirled around me. My heart was already racing, and the day hadn’t even truly begun. I whispered a prayer I’ve prayed…
Motherhood is beautiful – but let’s be honest, it can also be exhausting, emotional, and downright overwhelming. As moms, we carry a lot: laundry piles, sleepless nights, sibling squabbles, and the deep desire to raise our children well. In those moments when you feel like you’re at your breaking point, prayer becomes more than a…
Summer is finally here, and like many Christian moms, I’m planning out the weeks with hopes for sunshine, rest, and rhythms that keep our family rooted in what matters most – Jesus. One tradition that stands out as a spiritual highlight each year is Vacation Bible School (VBS). It’s colorful, loud (very loud), joy-filled, and…
