When Mama feels Unequipped: Trusting God in Your Teaching

The coffee is lukewarm, the math lesson is taking twice as long as you planned, and the toddler is climbing the table again. You wonder if you’re really cut out for this whole teaching thing.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re not enough for the task God has placed in front of you – whether that’s homeschooling your children, discipling their hearts, or simply showing up each day -you’re in good company.

Friend, you are not alone. And even better? You are not without help.

The Lie of “I’m Not Enough”

The enemy loves to whisper that you don’t have what it takes. He wants you to believe that because you don’t have a teaching degree, unlimited patience, or perfectly organized lesson plans, you can’t be the mother or teacher your children need.

But here’s the truth: God never asked you to be “enough” on your own. He asked you to be available. He equips those He calls.

"Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." - 2 Corinthians 3:5

Trusting the God Who Called You

If God has called you to teach your children – whether through homeschooling, guiding them in their faith, or simply walking alongside them in daily life – He will give you what you need.

Trusting Him in your teaching looks like:

Praying over your lessons before you start.

Asking Him for patience in the hard moments.

Leaning on His Word instead of your own abilities.

When we stop relying on our own strength and start relying on His, the weight lifts.

Real-Life Encouragement for the Unequipped Mama

I remember on particular morning when I was sitting at the table with Summit, working through his phonics lesson. Ridge was fussing in his highchair, Cedar had found a marker and was adding her own “art” to the wall, and Aspen was sitting across from me, stuck on the same word for what felt like forever. My patience was thin, the coffee was cold, and all I wanted to do was throw in the towel. But right there in the middle of the chaos, God whispered to my heart: This is holy work. Keep going.

Homeschooling, mothering, discipling – it’s all sacred. It may not feel glamorous, butt in heaven’s eyes, it’s holy ground.

Scriptures to Cling to When You Feel Unequipped

Here are a few verses to write on sticky notes, tape to your schoolroom wall, or keep in your Bible for the days you feel like you can’t do this.

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.

Practical Ways to Rest in God’s Strength

If you’re feeling overwhelmed today, try these:

Start the day in prayer – Even 5 minutes of focused prayer can set the tone.

Simplify you plan – Some days, less is more.

Invite God into the interruptions – He uses them to teach you and your children patience and grace.

Celebrate small wins – A finished math worksheet or a sweet sibling moment is worth noticing.

Closing Encouragement

Mama, you don’t have to be the “perfect” teacher for your children. You simply have to be the one God called. The One who knit them together in your womb also placed you in their life as their guide, their encouragement, and safe place.

You may feel unequipped, but God’s hands, you are exactly what your children need.

"The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it." - 1 Thessalonians 5:24

If this encouraged you today, share it with another mama who needs the reminder that God equips the called.
